Nintendo of America just poked the bear, and the bear is every millennial who wore a Pokéwalker to school. The official account posted a tease pointing toward some kind of return for Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, and the question now is what form it actually takes: a straight port, a re-remake, or something in between. GameRant has the rundown on what we know so far, which is, characteristically, not much.

If you need a refresher on why this matters, HeartGold and SoulSilver are widely considered the peak of the entire Pokémon series. The 2009/2010 DS remakes of Gold and Silver took the already-massive Johto games, kept the full 16-badge two-region structure, and wrapped the whole thing in the best presentation the series had managed up to that point. The Pokéwalker pedometer was the cherry on top. I remember grinding steps on that little clip-on during college lectures like it was a second save file in my pocket.

What makes a re-remake tricky is the same problem Final Fantasy fans argue about constantly. Nina Alvarez and I have been going in circles for years about whether the soul of a series lives in its past or its present, and Game Freak sits in the same trap. The Gen 4 remakes, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, played it so safe they felt like emulation with a new coat of paint. A HeartGold remake done that way would be a tragedy. Done with the care of a Let's Go treatment or something closer to the Legends: Arceus engine, and you've got an event.

The port scenario is simpler and, let's be real, more likely. HeartGold and SoulSilver have never left the DS, which means they've never been legally playable on anything modern. Some of the older Pokémon games got the Virtual Console treatment back in the 3DS era, but the remakes stayed locked to hardware with a dying battery and a second screen. Nintendo has been slowly drip-feeding DS games to Switch Online, and HGSS showing up there, or as a standalone release on Switch 2, would move an absurd number of units for zero development risk. Companies like easy money.

The timing lines up too. Pokémon Legends: Z-A shipped last year, the next mainline generation is presumably in the pipeline, and Nintendo has been mining nostalgia hard during the Switch 2 transition. When Nintendo is in tease mode, the gap between a random social post and an actual announcement is usually measured in weeks, not months. They don't post about a 16-year-old DS game for fun.

What I want, since you're asking: keep the two regions, keep the walking Pokémon, keep the soundtrack (that Goldenrod City theme earned its reputation), and give the Pokéwalker some kind of phone app equivalent. What I don't want is Brilliant Diamond energy, where the most interesting feature of the originals got quietly sanded off. Yellow gave us a following Pikachu first, sure, but HeartGold and SoulSilver let any Pokémon in your party walk behind you, and it took Game Freak another decade to bring that back. Don't make us wait again.

No date, no platform, no confirmation of anything beyond the tease itself. But Nintendo doesn't light this particular fuse by accident. Have you played HGSS recently, or is your copy sitting in a drawer with a dead internal battery like mine? Either way, keep an eye on Nintendo's channels. This one's going to move fast.
