October has turned into the wall this year's biggest games keep throwing themselves at, and IGN's running release calendar is a good reality check if you've lost track of what's landing when. I've been covering the fall slate since the summer and I still need the cheat sheet.

The short version: October brings some of the biggest games of the year, spread across PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC. Roundups of the month's lineup keep landing on the same handful of titles as the ones worth clearing a weekend for, and if you've paid any attention to the fall conversation, none of the names will surprise you.

I wrote last month that October is unusually crowded this year, and that holds up. Good games are stacked on top of each other, and half the stuff worth playing would be headlining its own news cycle in a quieter month. Instead they're fighting for the same paycheck weekend. I've seen this movie before, back when the holiday rush buried anything that shipped after Thanksgiving, and it never gets easier on the mid-sized games caught in the middle of it.

On the platform side, everyone eats. Switch 2 owners have real weight on the schedule this fall, PS5 players have a deeper bench than usual, and PC keeps getting basically everything. If you own one of each like I do, October is the month your backlog files a grievance.

December thins out fast, which is normal. Publishers have always treated December like a no-man's-land, going back to when retailers ruled the release calendar. Anything brave enough to take the slot either knows something everyone else doesn't or doesn't care.

My advice, same as it's been all year: don't pre-order any of this. Wait 48 hours after launch, let somebody else be the beta tester, then buy with confidence. In a month this packed, day-one server problems and rough patches are part of the deal, and you don't owe any publisher the benefit of the doubt.

If you want the full rundown of dates across every platform, IGN's calendar at the link above is the place to check, since dates this time of year move constantly. And if you spot something in October you're excited about that isn't getting the big marketing push, good. Those are the games that need the attention most.
