College football is back, and that means Ohio State dropped another gameday hype video. The Buckeyes put out their latest trailer Thursday, "The Bell Tolls," ahead of Saturday's season opener against Ball State. You can watch it over at 10TV's coverage.

If you've never seen one of these, Ohio State's video team has been quietly running one of the best production shops in college sports for years now. Every week of the season gets its own mini-film, cut like a movie trailer, with voiceover, slow-motion highlights and a title card hinting at the theme. In the '90s that was a broadcast package some network spent real money on. Now a university media department puts it out free on a Saturday morning.

The Hemingway nod in the title is doing the expected work. "The Bell Tolls" pairs nicely with opening-weekend gravitas, the long wait finally over and the clock run out on talking. For a season opener against a heavy underdog, you take your drama where you can find it, and the video team clearly decided to reach for literary weight rather than scoreboard predictions.

What I always appreciate is the craft. The editing syncs cuts to the music cues, the sound design leans into crowd noise from the Horseshoe, and there's usually a payoff shot of the team running out of the tunnel that would embarrass an EA Sports intro. It reminds me of the old NCAA Football presentation packages, where half the reason you booted the game was to watch the pregame montage. I sank entire evenings into those. Somebody at Ohio State clearly grew up on the same stuff I did.

On the field, the Ball State game is what it is. Openers against non-conference opponents exist to shake off rust, get young players live reps, and find out whether the offseason hype about position battles was real. The trailer does the emotional lifting the matchup might not, and that's fine. Every title run starts with somebody's week one, and Buckeyes fans know better than most that the playoff era punishes you for overlooking anyone.

The real test comes later, and the schedule will provide plenty of bell-tolling moments of its own. But for one Saturday in early September, it's football in Columbus again, a packed Shoe, and a video team treating week one like a premiere. Enjoy the montage. The games go fast.
