James Gray's Paper Tiger has been sitting at the top of my most-anticipated pile since Cannes, and now we finally know when everyone else gets a look at it. The new poster just confirmed when the trailer drops for the Adam Driver crime thriller, which you can catch over at Yahoo.

If you missed the Cannes chatter, short version: people came out of that one talking about Driver like Best Actor was a given. James Gray doing a crime thriller is already enough for me, I've been on board since The Immigrant, but Driver reportedly going somewhere raw and uncomfortable has the awards people circling already.

Gray is one of those directors I'll follow anywhere, even when the results are uneven. Armageddon Time didn't fully land for me but it was made with real conviction, and Ad Astra is still one of the more underrated studio swings of the last several years. A crime thriller shape gives him a tighter frame than he usually works with, and honestly that kind of constraint has produced his best stuff.

As for the poster itself, it's moody and minimal, the kind of thing that tells you nothing and makes you want to know everything. I mean, that's the job of a poster. No plot details spilled, just vibes and a date.

The timing makes sense, too. Awards season is about to get loud, and a trailer drop now puts Paper Tiger in the conversation right as the festival-to-fall pipeline fills up. We've got a loaded stretch ahead at the box office and this is the kind of adult-skewing drama that studios used to dump in October and hope for the best. Now it gets a proper runway.

I'll have my eyes on the trailer the minute it lands and I'll report back on whether the hype holds. Driver at full intensity in a Gray film is a pairing I've wanted without knowing I wanted. Anybody else already clearing space for this one, or are we waiting on the trailer to be sold?
