October was already shaping up to be a monster, and Polygon has narrowed the field to six PS5 releases the site calls must-plays. With GTA 6 looming sometime this fall and the calendar packed accordingly, a filter helps. I've been saying for weeks the season has nearly too many releases to track, so somebody doing the trimming is doing us a service.

I won't steal Polygon's whole list, but six picks for one platform in one month tells you how deep things have gotten. And this is my read, not a sourced claim: in a quieter month, half of these would be carrying their own headline cycles. The games don't get worse when the competition gets stiffer, they just get quieter. Some of the best SNES games I ever played got buried because they shipped within a month of Chrono Trigger. Same physics now, just with bigger marketing budgets.

The PS5 angle matters too. When a single platform's must-play list runs six deep in one month, that's a good sign for anyone who owns one. Between the titles Polygon flagged and the rest of the October slate, you could keep busy on PS5 alone until the GTA 6 chaos starts, whenever Rockstar finally drops it.

My usual advice applies double this month: don't pre-order all six. Pick your two, wait 48 hours after launch on the rest, and let somebody else find the broken save files. The Master Chief Collection taught a generation that lesson the hard way, and that's a personal scar talking, not a statistic.

Go read the full list at Polygon, then check your backlog and be honest with yourself about how many of these you'll actually finish before the fall's biggest release eats your free time alive.
