Amazon is widening the doors on Project Hail Mary. The adaptation of Andy Weir's novel, which already had one of the bigger theatrical footprints of the year, is getting an expanded 2026 release across premium formats, per Collider. More screens, more IMAX, and another shot at watching Ryan Gosling science his way out of certain death on the biggest wall of light your town has to offer.

If you've been anywhere near a theater this summer, you know this thing has been quietly enormous. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller took Weir's story about a lone astronaut waking up with amnesia aboard a spaceship hurtling toward a mission that could save Earth, and they somehow made it warm, which is the word I keep landing on no matter how many times I try another one. It's a disaster movie about math, and in my living room at least, it landed like a hug.

The expansion is Amazon basically admitting what the box office already told them. People are still showing up weeks in, which almost never happens outside the biggest event movies. I've said before that the old-fashioned recipe still works, a big star plus a story people actually wanted to see, and this movie is the platonic ideal of that recipe. Gosling doing confused, funny, terrified everyman energy is the exact thing he's best at.

What the new release doesn't answer is the sequel question. Fans have been asking all year, and Amazon has yet to officially green-light anything. So if you're holding your breath for Project Hail Mary 2, I'd let it out. Just go see this one again in a bigger format and be happy with what you have.

And in a year stacked with franchise giants, it's nice to see an original sci-fi story get this kind of theatrical backing at all. Jess teased me last week that I'd rank a three-hour movie over anything with a pop song in the trailer, and, I mean, she's not entirely wrong.

If you missed it in theaters the first time or you've been waiting on the premium format timing, this is your window. Bring a friend who hasn't read the book. Watching them figure out Rocky is half the experience.
