Remedy finally gave us a tiny scrap of info about the Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes, and that scrap is basically: go ask Rockstar. They confirmed that any announcements about the project will come from Rockstar Games, not them. So if you've been refreshing Remedy's social feeds hoping for a trailer drop, you can stop. The keys to this hype train are in Rockstar's pocket.

And that makes sense given how the deal is set up. Rockstar is the publisher here. Remedy created the original games and is doing the remake development, but Rockstar calls the shots on when the world gets to see it. Release dates, trailers, gameplay reveals, all of it flows through Rockstar's marketing pipeline. If you've followed Rockstar for any length of time, you know that pipeline moves at a geological pace.

The project was announced back in April 2022, described as a single unified remake covering both Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. It's been a little over three years and we haven't seen a single screenshot. No teaser trailer, no concept art, nothing. For a community that has been waiting on a proper return to Max's world, the quiet has been rough. Max Payne 3 came out in 2012 and while that game had its defenders, it wasn't quite the same beast. Remedy's statement at least confirms the project hasn't been quietly shelved, which I think was the real fear for a lot of fans.

TJ and I were actually talking about this in the PoliticNo Slack last week. He made the point that Remedy's narrative ambitions have grown so much since the original Max Payne that a faithful remake could feel restrained by comparison. I get that concern, but I also think there's a version of this project where the restraint is the whole point. Max Payne's story worked because it was lean and mean and drenched in atmosphere. You don't need a 40-hour open world for that. You need tight level design, punchy writing, and bullet-time that actually feels heavy.

The bigger question hanging over everything is timing. Rockstar has GTA 6 dominating the gaming world's attention right now, with trailer drops pulling massive viewership numbers. Where does a Max Payne remake even fit into that pipeline? That's a Rockstar question, and Rockstar doesn't answer questions until they're good and ready.

So we wait. Again. But at least now we know who we're waiting on.
