Rob Zombie's Firefly trilogy has always been a polarizing body of work. Some horror fans treat these movies like sacred text, with the grime and the chaos and the unrelenting nastiness of them feeling like a throwback to the dirt-cheap exploitation pictures that Zombie clearly worships. Other people watch five minutes and nope right out. Both reactions are completely valid, by the way.
The trilogy, for anyone who needs a refresher, includes House of 1000 Corpses, The Devil's Rejects, and 3 from Hell. It follows the Firefly family, a clan of serial killers who are somehow, against every moral instinct you have, positioned as the antiheroes you root for. Captain Spaulding, Baby and Otis are three of the most repulsive, fascinating characters in modern horror, and Sid Haig's performance across the first two films alone is worth the price of admission.
Lionsgate is giving the trilogy the full physical media treatment with an eight-disc collector's set on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and digital, landing on October 13, according to Yahoo Entertainment. The fact that it's getting a 4K upgrade at all is a win for anyone who collects physical media. I've always felt House of 1000 Corpses especially deserves a proper high-definition transfer, given how much of its grimy texture comes through in the original film stock.
What makes the Firefly trilogy interesting, beyond the gore and the needle drops, is how each film operates in a completely different genre. Corpses is a haunted-house carnival ride, a messy love letter to Texas Chain Saw Massacre and old roadside attraction Americana. The Devil's Rejects is a sun-baked Southern crime thriller that plays like The Getaway made by someone who has zero interest in restraint. And 3 from Hell is, well, it's the third one. It has its moments. Sheri Moon Zombie and Bill Moseley commit completely, and Richard Brake shows up to do his thing, but it's the weakest entry by a wide margin. Still, completing the set in 4K makes sense for collectors who want the full arc on their shelf.
I'm curious what extras Lionsgate packs in. Zombie is a filmmaker who actually puts together meaningful special features when given the chance, with behind-the-scenes footage and commentary tracks that reveal how much of these movies were shot on the fly with almost no money. If this set includes the full run of commentaries and making-of material from all three films, it becomes an easy recommendation for horror collectors.
I've always had a complicated relationship with Zombie as a filmmaker. His Halloween reboot is genuinely one of the most interesting horror remakes ever made because he tried something specific with it instead of just photocopying Carpenter's original. The Firefly movies, even at their most punishing to sit through, come from a real place of love for the genre. You can feel it in every frame. The guy lives and breathes this stuff.
The set is available for pre-order now through Amazon, and the October 13 release date puts it right in the sweet spot for Halloween season shelf browsing. Horror box sets tend to land in September or October for obvious reasons. If you've been holding off on upgrading your Firefly collection, this looks like the version to wait for.
