Fists only. That's the pitch behind Sealbreakers, the new roguelite brawler from Ukrainian studio Fire Sparrow Studio, and the free public playtest just went live on Steam. You can jump in right now, no purchase, no closed-beta begging, no keys to hunt for in Discord servers. Just hit the request button and go.
The hook is what the studio left out rather than what they put in. There are no weapons in Sealbreakers, at all. Every fight is hand-to-hand, and for a roguelite brawler that's a genuinely weird call when the genre's default is usually "give the player a sword, then a bigger sword, then a sword that shoots smaller swords." Fire Sparrow is betting that pure melee combat, dodge timing, spacing and the satisfaction of landing a clean hit with your own two hands can carry a whole run.
If you've read the original coverage over on MSN, you know the playtest is the studio's way of getting real player data before the full build takes shape. Roguelites live and die on feel, more than almost any other genre. A run-based game with mushy combat is dead on arrival, so putting a free build in front of the public early is the smart move, even if it means eating some rough feedback.
And there's a story behind the studio worth your attention too. Fire Sparrow Studio is a Ukrainian team, and like a lot of developers from the region over the past few years, they're shipping games while dealing with circumstances most of us can't imagine from behind our keyboards. Supporting studios like this isn't charity, the games have to stand on their own, but it does make rooting for them a little easier.
Weaponless combat sounds like a limitation until you remember how good the genre's best melee-only moments feel. Think about the flow of a tight brawler, the read-and-react loop where you bait an attack, slip past it, and punish. Removing weapons strips the game down to that loop with nothing to hide behind. No ranged safety net, no crutch item in a chest. Either you learn the rhythm or you don't survive the run.
For the roguelite structure it also raises some real questions. If every run is fists-only, where does build variety come from? Presumably movement tech, unlockable techniques, passives, whatever modifiers the run throws at you. That's the part a playtest can answer better than any trailer, and it's exactly the kind of thing I'd want the community weighing in on early.
So here's my ask: go request access, play an hour, then actually leave feedback in the Steam discussions or wherever Fire Sparrow is collecting it. Playtests only work when players show up for the boring part too, not just the free game part. And if you've got a regular group that tests stuff together, throw this one in the rotation and argue about the combat feel in your group chat, because that's where the real patch notes get written.
I know my crew will. Half of them are FFXIV raiders who think they understand dodge timing because they cleared a savage tier, and I can't wait to watch them get humbled by a brawler with no weapon to hide behind.
