Remember when Star Trek: Picard ended and everyone immediately started begging for Star Trek: Legacy? The show that would follow Captain Seven of Nine on the Enterprise-G with Raffi, Jack Crusher, the whole next-gen-next-gen crew? Paramount said nothing, the fandom waited, and... yeah. Well, the comics heard you. Collider reports that IDW's new Star Trek series is officially continuing the Enterprise-G story, and issue 2 is on the way.

so this is real canon-adjacent continuation stuff. Seven in the captain's chair, the Enterprise-G, the post-Picard timeline. It's basically the pitch Terry Matalas floated for Legacy, just living on the page instead of your TV. And comics continuing shows that never got proper endings is a long Star Trek tradition anyway. Lower Decks did it, the classic shows did it, it's the reliable move.

What's fun here is the crew actually gets room to breathe. TV Picard season 3 had to juggle a whole legacy cast, so folks like Raffi and Seven got arcs but not tons of quiet moments. A comic can slow down. You get the character beats and the weird one-off missions a prestige streaming season would never spend money on. Honestly the format might suit the Enterprise-G better than a show would.

If you slept on IDW's Trek line, decent time to jump in. They've been doing the connected-universe thing for a while, weaving the classic crews and the newer eras together, and the writers clearly know the lore cold. Issue 1 apparently set up the Enterprise-G era properly, so grabbing both issues gets you caught up in like twenty minutes of reading. I mean that's less time than one episode.

And can we talk about Seven as captain for a second. Jeri Ryan played that final Picard scene like someone who'd been waiting 25 years for it, and the comics get to keep pulling on that thread. Former Borg drone turned Starfleet captain is still one of the best redemption arcs the franchise has ever done, and there's so much story left in how she actually leads. Like is she Starfleet-by-the-book or still a little bit improvisational vigilante? the comic gets to answer that.

No word from Paramount on whether Legacy ever happens as an actual show, and at this point the silence kind of says everything. But the comics don't need a greenlight. The story's happening right now and issue 2 continues it.

I don't even read a ton of comics tbh, that's more my grandma Elizabeth's world than mine, but I read issue 1 in one sitting and immediately texted my Trekkie friend about it. Dante's the one who convinced me to watch Picard season 3 in the first place, so if he asks whether the comic's worth it: yes. Yes it is. Go get it before it sells out, because Star Trek number ones have a habit of doing that.
