Netflix is giving horror fans a reason to clear out their September watchlists. The streamer is adding six Resident Evil films next month, per Collider, and the lineup covers most of what the film side of this franchise has offered over the past two decades.

This is one of those franchises that refuses to sit still. Games, CGI movies, live-action reboots, and now the films are rotating back onto Netflix. Resident Evil has been through more formats than probably any game adaptation outside of, I'd argue, Pokémon, and people keep showing up anyway.

That's the interesting part to me. The Milla Jovovich-era movies took a critical beating for years, and yet they ran for six films and built a genuinely loyal fanbase. Those films understood something the games' more faithful adaptations are still chasing: you don't need scene-for-scene accuracy, you need vibes, monsters, and a heroine doing impossible things in a red dress. Say what you want about them, they had identity.

The timing works, too. Zach Cregger's Resident Evil reboot hits cinemas on September 18, 2026, and I wrote about its full trailer last month. Capcom's marketing machine is clearly warming up, and having the back catalog on the biggest streamer right before a theatrical relaunch is classic synergy. New viewers who catch the reboot can go home and mainline the older films the same weekend. Longtime fans get an easy excuse for a rewatch marathon.

Co-op horror fans get a nice bonus out of this too, though of a different flavor. If you've got a Discord full of friends running through Shift at Midnight or replaying the classics, a bad-movie night with the older films is basically a free social event. Cost kills more group plans than lack of interest ever does, and a Netflix subscription most people already have makes this the cheapest group activity in gaming-adjacent entertainment.

Six films is enough for a proper binge. Even the weaker entries are watchable with the right crowd, and the stronger ones hold up better than anyone expected back in 2002.

So here's my question for you: which Resident Evil movie is your comfort pick? Every Discord I've ever been in has that one person who will defend Apocalypse to the death. Mine is the original, no irony, the laser hallway scene still goes. Drop your pick in whatever group chat you've got going, and settle in for September.
