SEGA isn't letting up on the Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds DLC machine. October 14 brings the game's sixth paid add-on, the Avatar Legends Pack, which folds Nickelodeon's benders into the kart racing fold. Word comes via MSN's coverage of the SEGA Publishing Korea announcement.

If you've followed CrossWorlds this year, you know the guest character pipeline has basically been the game's whole personality. Sonic Team built a racer where crossover hooks land monthly, and an Avatar pack makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Aang and Katara are the confirmed playable additions, and even that pairing carries some charm. An airbender in a kart game, gliding through drift boosts? That fantasy writes itself. I want to say I spent an afternoon back in the day trying to get the Blue Blur to handle like a glider in Sonic R, and the memory still stings a little.

For now we know the date, the pack name, and the two characters. Pricing should land alongside the release. What's actually inside the pack beyond Aang and Katara, whether that's a themed vehicle or cosmetic extras, is anyone's guess. I'm speculating there and I want to be clear about it, because SEGA hasn't said what else is coming.

The crossover territory isn't new for CrossWorlds, which has leaned on guest characters since launch. Whether Avatar fans will cross over into a kart racer is the open question, though Nickelodeon's fanbase skews exactly the age range that still shows up for party racing games on a Friday night. Have you ever watched a group of twenty-somethings fight over who gets Aang? It's not pretty, and it sells DLC.

Guest-character DLC in racers goes back to the Dreamcast era for me, when Sega GT and company were still figuring out what a car pack even was. CrossWorlds is doing the modern version of that at a pace that suggests the roadmap runs well into next year. Six paid packs in a few months is aggressive by any standard.

If kart racing with elemental bending sounds like your thing, the Avatar Legends Pack hits Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds on October 14. And if the avatar state doesn't show up as some kind of boost mechanic while Aang is on the track, that's a missed opportunity SEGA won't get back.
