Sony revealed a brand-new PS5 controller this week, and it's landing right in the middle of the fall rush. The peripheral releases on October 30, with pre-orders opening October 2, according to the original report. So if your DualSense is drifting worse than a 1990s N64 analog stick, rescue arrives in about five weeks.

Sony has spent this generation proving controllers can be genuinely interesting again. The DualSense shipped with haptics and adaptive triggers that actually changed how games feel, and I say that as someone who was deeply skeptical. I remember the leap from the NES pad to the SNES shoulder buttons feeling like witchcraft, then watching every generation after pile on features nobody asked for. Sixaxis, anyone? For my money the DualSense was the first controller feature set in ages that earned its keep.

The late-October timing means fresh hardware lands right as holiday shopping kicks off, and a controller is one of the few accessories people reliably buy at full price without complaining. The alternative is playing a hundred-hour open world on sticks that fight back, and with a certain Rockstar game looming on the calendar, a whole lot of PS5 owners are about to find that out the hard way. Not going to speculate on exact timing here, but you know the game I mean.

Pre-orders opening October 2 gives you a little over a month of decision time. My usual advice applies: don't pre-order a first-run controller out of hype, but do pre-order if you already know you'll need one, because the good colorways always vanish and then show up at markup. Anyone who hunted for a specific DualSense color during the early shortage days knows exactly what I'm talking about. I don't remember how long that scarcity dragged on, only that it dragged.

Worth remembering too that Sony has kept the DualSense line busy since launch with a steady rotation of colors and limited editions, so even if this particular version doesn't grab you, another one will be along before long. The company treats controller colors the way Nike treats sneaker colorways, and it works.

No pricing came with the reveal coverage, so I won't guess at numbers. Sony has historically kept peripheral pricing in predictable lanes, and my bet is this one lands in the usual range rather than breaking new ground. We'll know for sure before October 2.

I'll have more when pre-orders go live on October 2, including hands-on impressions if review units make their way to my door. In the meantime, check your current controller's stick drift situation, because once the big fall games hit, nobody's shipping you a replacement in time.
