Four new movies hit theaters this weekend and it's a weirdly mixed bag, which is kinda my favorite kind of weekend? like one where there's an actual answer for whatever mood you're in. Yahoo Entertainment has the full preview but let's break it down real quick.

first up: Insidious: Out of the Further. yes, they're still making these. The franchise is well over a decade old at this point and it just refuses to die, which... respect I guess? If you like the Lipstick Face Demon and all that jump-scare machinery, this is your weekend. I've been soft on the later entries but horror fans keep showing up so someone's enjoying them. Blumhouse horror tends to do numbers in my experience but that's just my read, not a guarantee.

Then there's Mutiny, the Jason Statham one. I wrote about it last week when it had a rough start at the box office, but per this weekend's slate it's landing as a new release now, so consider this your actual heads up if you missed my whole thing about it. Statham punching people is always at least watchable, I've just been saying for a while that the mid-budget action movie is getting squeezed from both sides and that opening did not help my mood about it.

The Magic Faraway Tree is the family option of the bunch. It's based on the classic Enid Blyton books, the ones your grandma probably read... actually mine had the whole shelf of them next to the gadget drawer (RIP, miss her every day). Big whimsical tree, magical lands at the top, the whole thing. It looks genuinely charming and if you've got kids or you just want two hours of gentle fantasy, this is the move. We don't get a lot of live-action family adventure that isn't a sequel to something, so I'm rooting for it a little.

And then Spa Weekend, which is the wildcard of the group for me. I don't know much about it going in and that's kind of why I'm curious. Movies I go in cold on either vanish in a weekend or become the movie everyone's quoting by October. no in between. I genuinely never know with these and that's the fun of it.

So the menu is: horror, action, family fantasy, or something new. pick based on vibes. That's a rare weekend where I can actually say that without stretching.

If you're asking me? I'm probably doing Insidious opening night because I have a moral obligation to see demon stuff in a theater with a screaming audience, and then squeezing in The Magic Faraway Tree on Sunday as a palate cleanse. will report back. If I don't, the Further got me.
