Seven days. That's all it took for Spider-Man: Brand New Day to become the highest-grossing movie of 2026 so far. It crossed a billion dollars faster than basically anything I can remember, and it's still going.

I've been tracking this one since the numbers started rolling in last Friday, when it cracked the biggest domestic box office opening of all time, beating out Avengers: Endgame. That alone would've been enough. But then it just kept going. A reported $1.155 billion globally in seven days. Now it sits at the top of the year and nobody else is even close.

This doesn't feel like one of those inflated, marketing-driven numbers where a movie limps to a milestone because it had no competition. I still haven't published my full take because I want to sit with it for a proper second viewing, but the energy around this movie feels earned in a way that some of the more recent Marvel entries just didn't. People are genuinely excited about this one.

I know the MCU box office conversation has been exhausting over the past couple years. Every release turned into some referendum on whether superhero movies are "back" or whatever. But sometimes a movie just works and people want to see it. The theater by my house had lines wrapped around the building on a Tuesday afternoon. A Tuesday.

Brand New Day officially surpassed Toy Story 5 to claim the 2026 crown. Two massive hits breathing the same summer air is a good thing for theaters, good for people who actually like going to the movies, and a nice reminder that the box office can still surprise you.

I'll have more detailed thoughts once I've seen it again. For now, if you haven't gone yet, maybe just go. Bring a friend. Experience the whole theater gasping at whatever it is that's making them gasp. You'll know the moment.
