Star Trek: Strange New Worlds just kicked off season 4 and... dinos? On Mars? yeah I know how that sounds. somehow it works.

the premiere episode, "Valles Marineris," throws the enterprise crew into a time-travel situation with actual dinosaurs running around the Valles Marineris canyon on Mars. it is exactly the kind of unhinged premise this show keeps pulling off with a straight face. Per the Redshirts review over on MSN, the episode leans hard into classic Trek territory. big swings, weird sci-fi concepts, and a crew that just... knows who they are at this point.

that last part matters more than the dinosaurs tbh. four seasons in, Strange New Worlds has figured out its identity in a way a lot of modern Trek never quite does. the characters feel settled. the tone feels right. its not trying to reinvent itself every episode or chase some massive serialized mystery across ten episodes. it just tells a story. a weird one sometimes! but a complete one.

and okay I need to talk about the dinosaur thing for a second because I kept waiting for it to feel stupid and it never did. the review points out that the episode uses the time-travel mechanics to set up something genuinely fun instead of just being confusing, which tracks with what this show does best. it takes bonkers concepts and commits to them fully. no winking at the camera. no "hey isnt this crazy" energy. just full belief in the material.

Dante's probably gonna write 2,000 words about this episode and I'll read every single one because when that man says a show is worth your time, it is. but from my end? this is just a really solid confident season opener that reminds you why this show became the best Trek on TV right now. not even a debate at this point.

the review specifically calls out how "Valles Marineris" functions as a classic Trek season premiere. meaning it's less about setting up a season-long arc and more about dropping you back into this world with something exciting. refreshing! in a tv landscape where every show wants to be a ten-hour movie, there's a lot to be said for a show that still believes in the episode as its own thing.

Pike remains the best captain in modern Trek. I said what I said. the crew dynamics are sharp, the pacing doesnt drag, and the episode looks incredible. like genuinely gorgeous. the martian canyon sequences are some of the best visuals this show has delivered.

if season 4 keeps this energy we're in for a good run. Strange New Worlds has earned the benefit of the doubt at this point, and "Valles Marineris" does nothing to make you question that.
