Sixty years. That's how long the Enterprise has been flying, and Paramount is marking the occasion the way studios should mark occasions: with a physical release you can actually put on a shelf. Collider reports that Star Trek: The Original Series is getting a big 60th anniversary Blu-ray release this September, and it sounds like a proper one.

The set gathers all three seasons of the original series, the version of the show that started everything back in 1966 when nobody at NBC quite knew what they had. William Shatner's Kirk, Leonard Nimoy's Spock, DeForest Kelley's McCoy, all of it remastered and packed together for the anniversary. If you've only ever known Trek through the movies or the newer shows, this is the source code. Thirty years of Trek spinoffs, from Next Generation to Strange New Worlds, trace back to these 79 episodes.

I know physical media gets dismissed as a collector's hobby now, but I've said this before and I'll keep saying it: you can't replace holding the thing. Streaming catalogs quietly lose titles, resolutions get compressed, and one day the show you love just isn't there anymore. A Blu-ray set doesn't vanish because a licensing deal expired. For a franchise turning 60, having a definitive home version on the shelf feels right in a way a "leaving Netflix next month" notification never will.

The original series has been through the remaster wringer before, of course. The updated effects from the earlier HD releases, the cleaned-up Enterprise flybys, the whole debate about whether the new CGI honors or steamrolls the 1960s charm. Purists will always want the original effects, and I get it. There's a texture to those practical models and painted backdrops that belongs to the era. But a good remaster done with care lets new viewers actually sit through episodes that might otherwise feel like artifacts under glass.

What strikes me about the 60th anniversary is how rare this is. Very few shows get to celebrate six decades of continuous cultural life. Trek survived cancellation, animated Saturday mornings, a film series, a long drought, and then an absolute flood of new series on Paramount+. The fact that people still care about the original episodes, still quote them, still argue about which season of the original is best (it's one, fight me), says the show earned its longevity.

The set arrives this month, so if you've got a Trek fan in your life, holiday shopping just got easier. And if that Trek fan is you, this is the year.

Me, I'll probably put on "The City on the Edge of Forever" the day it arrives, because some episodes you just revisit like old friends. Jess keeps telling me there's a newer show I should be watching instead, and she's probably right, but the shelf comes first. What's your go-to Original Series episode? I'm always collecting recommendations, even when I've already seen them all.
