The Apothecary Diaries is coming back October 2, and I could not be more relieved, because this year needed it. Crunchyroll confirmed the date alongside a new trailer and a fresh key visual, which you can check out over at Game Rant's coverage.

I know "anime of the year" gets thrown around every season like confetti, but this one earns it. Maomao and Jinshi running their poison-obsessed, slow-burn, court-intrigue chess match inside the inner palace is the rare show that works as a mystery, a romance and a comedy all at once, without any of those modes stepping on the others. I've rewatched the first two seasons twice, and I caught new details both times. It's constructed like a good novel, which makes sense, because it came from one.

I've watched the new trailer more times than I'd like to admit, but I'll spare you the beat-by-beat, because half the fun of an Apothecary Diaries preview is going in cold and arguing about it afterward. Go watch it yourself, I mean it.

What has me curious this season is how far the story pushes into the bigger political machinery of the court. The previous season kept widening the scope, and the source material gets increasingly bold about who's actually pulling strings. If the adaptation keeps pace, we're in for some genuinely tense episodes beyond the usual cozy mystery-of-the-week stuff. Though I'd happily take more cozy mystery-of-the-week stuff too. Maomao taste-testing something potentially lethal never gets old.

Jess has been telling me all year that this show is "basically a procedural in robes," and she means it as a tease, but she's not wrong, and she's also watched every episode, so I rest my case.

The premiere is locked for October 2 on Crunchyroll, so mark it down. If you haven't started, you've got a month exactly, and two seasons is a very doable binge. Trust me on this one.
