Crossover I didn't see coming. The Chosen, the show about Jesus and his disciples, lands a reality TV spinoff. In The Wild With Bear Grylls takes cast members out of ancient Judea and drops them into real wilderness survival. All six episodes come to Prime Video on August 9, 2026.

Per Collider, the show pairs Bear Grylls with several cast members for what sounds like standard celebrity survival. Less scripted biblical drama, more sweating through a shirt while somebody debates eating a beetle.

The Chosen has built a serious audience over its run, enough that a spinoff like this makes financial sense. I haven't watched enough to judge where it stands creatively. Prime Video backing a side project tells you the viewers are there and the platform thinks it's worth the bet.

Reminds me of the early 2000s when every successful property got a spinoff whether it made sense or not. Remember when The O.C. tried launching a series about Newport Beach's interior design scene? No? There's a reason. Most of those experiments died quiet deaths. This actually makes more sense than the usual brand extension.

The Chosen leans into cast personalities, on and off screen, at least from what I've caught in passing. Putting those actors in a survival format with Grylls feels like a natural extension. You're not watching characters. You're watching the actors deal with discomfort, exhaustion, probably a few questionable culinary decisions.

I covered the The Traitors teaser recently, and Prime Video seems to be investing heavily in unscripted and reality-adjacent stuff. That show captures a specific kind of interpersonal tension reality TV handles well when done right. Adding a survival show with a built-in fanbase is a smart move.

What I can't tell you yet is which cast members participate. The announcement is light on specifics, and I'd expect more reveals between now and August 9. The cast is large at this point in the show's run, so plenty to pull from. Whether we get major players or supporting ensemble is the question.

Grylls is a known quantity. You know what you're getting: dramatic landscapes, questionable survival techniques that look great on camera, that infectious enthusiasm he brings to everything. He's run this format with athletes, politicians, actors. Biblical-era character actors in the mix is new territory.

I won't pretend a reality survival spinoff is the kind of prestige TV I usually get excited about. If the instincts that built The Chosen's audience carry over, it could be more than a novelty. August 9, 2026 is close enough that we'll find out soon.
