ok so the first Oppenheimer trailer has been out for a while now and I know I'm late to the party but I watched it three times in a row the other day, no regrets. Variety covered the release if you want the news side of it.

First off, this thing looks HUGE. Like, black and white sections huge, sweeping score huge, Cillian Murphy just staring into the camera with those eyes that have been carrying Peaky Blinders for basically the show's entire run huge. You know a trailer's working when you get chills off a shot of a guy sitting in a chair.

Murphy's playing J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist behind the Manhattan Project, and the whole first look is basically built around him. Which makes sense. It's his face, his silence, his dread doing all the heavy lifting.

And the format stuff is the part my grandma would care about (she's a tech writer, she notices cameras before she notices actors), it was shot on IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film, some of it in actual black and white. In a world where every other movie is half a render farm, shooting on real film at that scale is a whole flex.

What I'll say on tone without overclaiming anything: the first look runs on Murphy's face and the weight of the history more than anything else. Everyone already knows how this story goes, so the dread does the work.

Dante's take when I sent it to him: "three hours, guaranteed." And you know what, he's probably right, and for once I might not even complain. Some stories need the room.

No beat-by-beat breakdown from me on this first trailer, that's what the longer cuts are for. But color me locked in. If the movie lands even half as hard as this first look we're all gonna leave the theater feeling like we got run over in a good way.

Watch it, then come talk to me, because I have theories and nobody in my group chat is answering fast enough.
