ok so the Capitol is reopening its doors. Lionsgate just announced the cast for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and per Entertainment Weekly, we're getting a whole wave of new faces stepping into Panem. Like, a LOT of new faces. I read the list twice and still had to google half of them, which is either a great sign (fresh talent!) or a sign I'm old at 22, don't answer that.
If you need a refresher (or you're like me and just like talking about this franchise any chance you get), Songbirds and Snakes goes back 64 years before Katniss ever pulled a bow. Young Coriolanus Snow, the mentor gig, Lucy Gray Baird, the 10th Hunger Games being an absolute mess production-wise. It's the prequel that shouldn't have worked and kind of did anyway? Rachel Zegler carried so hard in that movie it's not even funny.
So what's the deal with a new cast announcement for a story we've already seen? Details are still thin and the studio is being weirdly quiet about whether this is a re-adaptation, a companion piece, or something tied to the next Hunger Games book, Sunrise on the Reaping, which has its own movie cooking. But the casting news is real, it's from EW, and the names are officially in.
New faces in an established franchise is always a coin flip. Sometimes you get an actor nobody knew who walks off with the whole movie (hi, Tom Blyth as young Snow, genuinely underrated performance). Sometimes you get... well, we've all seen recasting go wrong and I'm not naming names today. The point is the franchise has a pretty decent track record here. Even the least-loved Hunger Games movies are cast well. Nina Jacobson's team does not miss on this stuff.
What I keep thinking about is how much the prequel cast had to do with zero precedent. Zegler, Blyth, Viola Davis having the time of her life with those snakes, Peter Dinklage being bitter and incredible. The new batch is walking into a franchise where the audience already knows the world AND already has opinions about this specific story. That's harder. You're not just playing a character, you're playing a character somebody else already played well. That's the part nobody talks about with these things.
Also, side note, but Panem casting announcements are an event in a way most franchise news isn't. The tributes get rolled out district by district, fans start making fancasts and edits within like an hour, and by dinner the whole timeline has decided who's going to be their favorite. It's the one fandom where the marketing cycle itself feels like a Hunger Games and I mean that as a compliment.
No release date attached to this yet, and no word on whether any of the original songbirds and snakes cast might show up. If Zegler pops up in literally any capacity I will be insufferable about it, fair warning.
I'll update the second we get a trailer, a date, or basically any crumbs about who's playing who. Grandma always says don't report on what you wish were true, report on what you know, so: the cast is announced, everything else is a mystery. For now. The Capitol loves a slow reveal.
