ok so this is not a drill. Naruto is coming back to theaters. Viz Media confirmed a new Naruto movie is on the way, and the first look is dropping soon, like actually soon, not "soon" in the anime announcement sense where you wait four years and get a key visual of a tree.
Comicbook.com broke the news that the franchise is gearing up for its big animated return, and the wording around it is interesting too. Viz is describing this as part of bringing the Naruto story toward its end, which, hold on, let me sit with that for a second.
an ending. a real one. For a franchise that has been running in some form or another since 1999 (the manga), 2002 (the first anime), and then spun off into Boruto for another decade, the idea that someone is actually drawing a line under it feels wild. Most shonen franchises just... never stop. They get sequels about the sequel's kids. They get reboots of reboots. Naruto deciding to go out with a proper movie instead of fading into infinite spinoff purgatory is lowkey the most respectful thing it could do.
And I mean, this is Naruto. This is the franchise that taught an entire generation that running with your arms behind your back makes you faster. That gave us the Pain fight, the Rock Lee vs Gaara fight, the sadness of a thousand "Believe it!" dubs. The openings alone could headline a nostalgia tour. Blue Bird comes on anywhere near me and I'm instantly fifteen again doing nothing productive.
Details are thin right now, which is standard for these announcements. No word on whether this picks up after Boruto, whether it's adapting anything specific from the manga's later material, or who's directing. Studio Pierrot has handled the animation for the whole franchise so far so the safe bet is them, but I've been wrong about safe bets before (see: every DC release schedule ever). The one concrete thing we have is that a first look is coming soon, and given how these things usually go, that probably means a teaser visual or a short clip at an upcoming event or Jump Festa style showcase.
What I'm genuinely curious about is the tone. Naruto's emotional endgame stuff, the generational themes, the parents and kids stuff, is where the franchise has always been strongest, no notes. Say what you want about the war arc being seventy episodes too long (it was), but when this story lands a final emotional beat, it LANDS. If this movie is built to close everything out, there's a real chance it goes for the throat.
My grandma always told me the best tech is the stuff people build memories on top of, and anime works the exact same way. Nobody remembers the filler episodes. Everybody remembers where they were when a character came back or a rivalry finally resolved. A movie built to be the ending is exactly the kind of thing people carry with them.
No release date yet, no trailer yet, just the promise that the first look is close. I'll be watching for it the second it drops, probably at 2am, probably crying about something I predicted three paragraphs ago. Believe it. (sorry. had to.)
