Nolan's Odyssey run keeps getting sillier in the best way. The film has now climbed past Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 on the all-time worldwide box office chart, taking over a spot Potter fans have guarded like a Horcrux since 2011. MSN has the details, but the short version is the Greeks have officially beaten the wizards.

Deathly Hallows: Part 2 sits at around $1.34 billion worldwide and it's still the highest-grossing film in the Harry Potter franchise, so this was a genuinely meaningful bar to clear. Now The Odyssey slides past it on the all-time chart. I wrote earlier this summer, when the worldwide numbers were piling up, that the word-of-mouth on this thing felt unlike anything I'd tracked this year, and that's still my read. Take it as one couch potato's opinion, but people keep showing up for this one.

The matchup itself is what makes the milestone fun. A Homer adaptation from a director known for making audiences do homework and somehow thanking him for it, versus the movie that defined the end-of-franchise event era. If you'd told me five years ago audiences would show up in these numbers for a guy rowing a boat, I'd have asked what was in the water. People will go to the theater for anything, as long as it feels like an event.

Where does it stop? The next names up the chart are real heavyweight territory, and in my experience Nolan movies tend to have long tails, so I wouldn't bet against it climbing another rung or two before the re-release crowd gets their second viewing in.

Anyway. The Odyssey is still playing everywhere, and if you haven't gone yet, what are we even doing. Just maybe don't buy your ticket from a guy on a resale site. You know better.
