If you're hoping to stream The Rivals of Amziah King from your couch this weekend, I've got some bad news for you. The movie is playing in theaters and theaters only when it opens Friday, August 14.

No Netflix. No Amazon Prime Video. No VOD drop to rent at home. You've got to put on pants and go sit in a building with strangers, the way movies used to work before we all got spoiled by streaming.

I get the impulse. We've been conditioned to wait about three weeks for everything to land on a service we already pay for. Jess Wingo and I were just talking about how the window between theatrical and streaming has gotten so short that half the time you blink and something's already on Peacock. But every now and then a movie comes along that says no, you have to actually show up for this one.

The Rivals of Amziah King is one of those movies. It's been building buzz on the festival circuit, and the decision to keep it theatrical-only, at least for its opening, tells you the filmmakers believe in the big screen experience for this particular story. That's becoming a rarity.

So if this one's been on your radar, check your local listings and make a plan. Grab the overpriced popcorn. Sit in the dark for two hours without checking your phone. It won't kill you.

Will it eventually land on a streaming service? Probably. Almost everything does eventually. But right now, your only ticket in is an actual ticket.
