Summer's winding down and the theatrical slate is thinning out the way it always does this time of year, but there's one title worth clearing an evening for. Fox 2 Now's Kathy Kaiser ran down the new releases heading into the weekend, and the headline name is The Rivals of Amziah King, rated R, running 2 hours and 15 minutes.

That title might ring a bell. I flagged this one a couple weeks back when it was clinging to a limited theatrical footprint, and the situation hasn't changed much. This is a movie you have to actively go find, which in 2026 is almost a personality test for moviegoers. The people who seek it out tend to come out the other side evangelizing about it, and I get why. Two hours and 15 minutes, rated R, and clearly not trying to be everything to everyone. I respect that math.

I'll keep my plot opinions to myself here, mostly because the weekend rundown doesn't give much away and I'd rather you walk in cold anyway. I hate knowing too much going in. What I will say is that the R rating and that runtime suggest a movie with confidence, one that figures you'll meet it on its terms. Whether it fully lands is a conversation I'm happy to have after you've seen it. Jess Wingo and I have been going back and forth about it already, and she usually clocks out of anything over two hours, so the fact that she's still talking about it counts for something.

The rest of the weekend field is the usual end-of-August grab bag, and Kaiser's full rundown at the link above has the complete list along with showtimes. Late August is always a strange pocket of the calendar, the blockbusters have mostly spent themselves and the fall prestige stuff hasn't arrived yet, so this is when you find the oddballs. Sometimes that's exactly what you want.

But Amziah King is the pick if you're only leaving the house once this weekend. Limited-release math is brutal for movies like this. Every ticket bought in the next few days is basically a vote for whether it expands further or vanishes quietly, and I've watched too many oddball films get the second outcome because everyone said "I'll catch it later." Later sometimes never comes.

So that's the weekend. One movie the picturehouses are trusting you to find on your own, plus whatever holdovers are still playing at your local multiplex, and a lot of couch options if you'd rather stay in.

Me, I'm planning to catch it on the big screen Saturday, then home to finish arguing with Jess about the third act. What are you watching this weekend?
