Nic Cage's biggest action era is coming home in the best possible way: two of his most iconic '90s blockbusters, The Rock and Con Air, are getting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases this holiday season, per Yahoo Entertainment.

This is the one-two punch from 1996 and 1997 that turned Cage into the biggest action weirdo on the planet. I mean that as the highest possible compliment.

If you somehow need a refresher: The Rock is the Michael Bay movie where Sean Connery breaks into Alcatraz and Cage plays an FBI chemist who'd rather not be there, nerding his way through a hostage crisis while humming Elton John. It's still Bay's best film and I will not be taking questions. Con Air then handed Cage a mullet, a stuffed bunny, and a plane full of the most over-qualified character actors ever assembled, John Cusack, Steve Buscemi, John Malkovich going full Malkovich, and let it rip. Neither movie makes a lick of sense. Both are perfect.

This is also the era of Cage I get most nostalgic about, because it's the exact stretch where he won Best Actor for Leaving Las Vegas and then spent the next decade sprinting away from explosions. Leaving a prestige drama for a prisoner-transport plane is a career swerve most actors wouldn't survive. Cage made it look obvious.

And these aren't bare-bones catalog dumps. The new releases come with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision restorations, plus bonus features including 'A View from the Top,' which is exactly the kind of thing that separates a real 4K upgrade from a studio checking a box. If you've only ever heard Connery's Alcatraz monologue through TV speakers, you're in for a treat.

Physical media keeps quietly winning. Streaming catalogs rotate; a 4K disc doesn't vanish at midnight because some licensing deal expired. Cage's action run is exactly the catalog that deserves a permanent spot on the shelf.

I've made my three-hour-movie peace with Jess Wingo plenty of times on this site, but this is the flip side of my taste. Sometimes I don't want a solemn odyssey. Sometimes I want Nic Cage in a mullet telling a serial killer to put the bunny back in the box. Both of those can live in one couch potato's heart, and my shelf is about to get a little more crowded.
