Free TV is free TV. And when it's something people are actually curious about? Even better.

The Shards drops its series premiere tonight, and you can catch the first two episodes without paying for it. The catch is that it comes through a DIRECTV free trial, which is one of those sign-up situations where you'll want to keep track of when the trial ends if you don't plan to stick with the service. If you just want to sample the show tonight, that's the door.

The show is based on Bret Easton Ellis's 2023 novel, and that book divided people pretty sharply. Half my feed was obsessed with it, the other half thought it was self-indulgent. That's kind of Ellis's whole thing, right? You either buy into the atmosphere he's building or you don't. Translating that to screen is a tricky balancing act, and I'm genuinely curious which way they went with it.

As AL.com breaks down, the free access runs through a DIRECTV trial. So it's not a no-strings-attached situation, but it does get you in the door for tonight's two-episode premiere without paying anything upfront.

We're drowning in streaming options right now. Getting people to sample something new is hard when their watchlist already looks like a CVS receipt. A free trial removes the cost question, at least for tonight. You still have to sign up for something, which is a different kind of friction. But it's the version that's available.

If The Shards hooks you with these first two episodes, the rest of the season will be available on the network's streaming platform. Standard setup. Tonight is the no-cost version, and that's the version worth knowing about.

I haven't seen it yet. Jess was telling me she read the book on a flight last year and couldn't put it down, which means I'll probably get a text from her around episode two tonight with some opinion she can't hold in. I'll be watching right alongside everyone else, forming my own take in real time.

If you've been on the fence about this one, tonight's your shot. Free trial, two episodes, and you'll know by the end of the second one whether this is a world you want to live in for a full season.
