Adult Swim is doing that thing it does again, dropping something weird into the midnight slot and daring you to keep up. This time it's The Terrors of Jordan Mendoza, a new live-action series premiering Sunday, Sept. 13, at midnight ET, which depending on your sleep schedule is either tonight or a very bad decision tomorrow morning. There's a way to watch it free, and I'll point you toward that in a second.

First, the pitch. Jordan Mendoza comes out of that corner of the comedy internet where the sketches feel beamed in from a slightly off version of reality, and Adult Swim has always seemed like the natural home for that energy, going back to the Tim and Eric days. A full live-action series built around that sensibility reads like the network getting back to its roots after a stretch of leaning on anime blocks and reruns. Not that I'm complaining about the anime blocks. I watch a lot of anime blocks.

The midnight ET premiere is classic Adult Swim too. That slot is where the weird stuff lives, the stuff that would get flattened in prime time by algorithm-friendly consensus. Some of the best things the network has ever aired premiered when nobody sane was awake to see it, and then people like me found them at 2 a.m. six months later and wouldn't shut up about them.

Now the free part, which is why you're here. I'm not going to walk you through the mechanics myself, because the details depend on which route you take, but MSN has the full step-by-step breakdown, covering the free options for tonight's premiere. Go there for the specifics, come back here for the vibes.

Should you actually stay up for it? I'd say yes, with the usual Adult Swim caveat that you're signing up for a coin flip. When this network swings, it either makes something you'll quote for a decade or something you'll forget by Tuesday. But the live-action originals that connect, stuff like The Eric Andre Show or Joe Pera Talks With You, become genuinely beloved, and Mendoza's voice is strange enough that I'm curious which side of the line this one lands on.

Jess Wingo keeps telling me I need to stop recommending things at midnight because nobody watches live anymore, and I keep telling her that's the whole point. Watching weird TV when it airs, half-delirious, is how the cult classics get made.

So set an alarm, or don't and just catch up later through whatever free option MSN lays out. But if you're up anyway with some time you're not using, take the swing tonight at midnight ET. Worst case, you fall asleep. Best case, you're early to the next thing everyone's talking about.
