Some movies earn their nostalgia. The Transformers: The Movie, the 1986 animated feature that broke an entire generation of kids, is one of those movies. Now it's coming back to theaters in 2026 with something nobody expected: a brand-new post-credits scene.

The original report from MSN says the re-release will include a scene that plays after the credits roll. No details yet on what the scene actually contains, which is both maddening and kind of perfect. Less is more here.

If you grew up with this film, you already know why it matters. If you didn't, let me paint the picture. It's 1986. You're a kid who watches the cartoon every Saturday morning. You love Optimus Prime like a second father. You go to the theater, popcorn in hand, ready for robots punching each other. And then, not that far in, Optimus Prime dies. On screen. In your arms, emotionally speaking.

The movie also featured Stan Bush's "The Touch," which went on to become the official anthem of feeling awesome about yourself while doing something moderately impressive. It gave us Orson Welles as Unicron, a planet-eating robot god, which is the kind of casting that shouldn't work and absolutely does. The soundtrack was basically a hair metal mixtape attached to a children's movie about transforming vehicles.

The film was a box office disappointment at the time. It found its audience on VHS, then DVD, then every streaming service that would have it. A whole generation of millennials needed to process grief through animated robots before they had the vocabulary for that kind of thing.

Adding a post-credits scene to a movie that predates the post-credits scene era is a fascinating choice. It's either a tease for something new, a deleted scene finally seeing the light of day, or a completely original creation meant to give fans one more moment with characters they've loved for four decades. Any of those could be great. Some of them could be terrible. Someone cares enough about this property to create new content for a theatrical re-release, which tells you something about the staying power.

Fathom Entertainment has confirmed that tickets go on sale August 7, with the theatrical release hitting UK and US cinemas in September 2026. So now you've got a date to circle.

Some movies you watch. Some movies you live through. The Transformers: The Movie is the second kind, and it deserves another round on the biggest screen possible.
