If you've read my stuff before, you know I have a deep, maybe slightly embarrassing affection for 1986's The Transformers: The Movie. The one that scarred a generation of kids in theater seats, the one with the Stan Bush-heavy soundtrack that still gets me every time. So when I saw that threezero is putting out a new MDLX Optimus Prime specifically themed around that movie, yeah, I got a little misty.

The figure is part of threezero's MDLX line, which has been doing genuinely impressive work translating classic Transformers designs into highly articulated, stylized collectibles. This particular Optimus is a special edition tied to the film's 40th anniversary. The math checks out: 1986 plus 40 is 2026, and that's the window this figure is shipping in. Forty years. I'm going to let that sit for a second.

What makes this version distinct from the standard MDLX Optimus that threezero already released comes down to one key change. The figure builds on the animated version from 2024 but introduces a newly sculpted head based on Optimus's appearance in the film. You can check out the full reveal and images over at Bleeding Cool, where they've got the rundown on what's included.

In my experience threezero's MDLX line sits in an interesting space in the collectible world. These aren't trying to be perfect screen-accurate reproductions down to every last rivet. They feel more like love letters to the designs, with a slightly exaggerated sensibility that makes them look great on a shelf. The articulation is solid, and to me the whole vibe is very much "cool object you want to display" rather than "engineering marvel you're afraid to touch." That's my read on the line anyway.

I've been covering a lot of Transformers stuff lately, between the theatrical re-release announcement for the '86 film and the general resurgence of interest in that era of the franchise. Jess Wingo caught me looking at pre-order pages last week and said something about how I collect robot nostalgia like a dragon hoards gold. She's not wrong.

The movie edition MDLX Optimus is priced at 19,500 yen, which converts to roughly $180 USD, and is available for pre-order right now with a 2026 release window. If you've been waiting for a figure that captures Optimus as he appeared in that 1986 film, this one's worth a look.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go listen to "The Touch" and think about my life choices.
