Apple has released tvOS 27, and it's one of those updates that quietly rearranges the furniture in your living room. Some of it you'll like, some of it you won't, and if you're still holding onto an older Apple TV box, this is the update where the music stops. The fine folks at Geeky Gadgets have the full rundown if you want every last detail.

Bad news first, I always say. tvOS 27 drops support for both the Apple TV HD and the first-generation 4K model from 2017. If you own one of those, your box will keep working, it just won't be invited to the party anymore. No new features, no new updates of any kind through this channel. What Apple's long-term support looks like for discontinued boxes is anyone's guess, and I won't pretend to know. I suspect some of you have that HD model tucked behind the TV still chugging along, and believe me, I understand the urge to keep it going. I kept a 2009 Mac mini running as a media server for years out of pure stubbornness. But eventually you're not saving money anymore, you're just postponing the inevitable.

Now for the nicer part. The headline feature for most people will be smart download. Your Apple TV will fetch new episodes of shows you follow so they're ready when you are, no manual digging required. If you ever manually synced episodes to an iPod before a flight, you know exactly how far we've come. We used to plan our media like a military operation. Now the box just handles it.

The other big change is visual. tvOS 27 brings the liquid glass design to the big screen, with translucent layers and refraction effects. Very pretty, and on a nice television it genuinely looks like the interface is floating. Whether it makes finding a show any faster is another question, but a little beauty in your daily devices was never a sin in my book.

Should you update today? If you have a supported model, yes, go right ahead. Unlike the developer betas I keep warning people away from, this is the finished release, and the smart download feature alone is worth the two minutes it takes. Technology should work for you, quietly doing useful things in the background while you get on with your evening. Smart download does exactly that.

If you're one of the folks with a dropped model, take a breath before rushing to replace it. Your box still plays everything it played yesterday. But start a little mental countdown clock, because app developers tend to move on from unsupported hardware faster than any of us would like. I've seen this movie before, several times, and it always ends the same way...
