Nintendo did it again. No warning, no Direct, no drip-feed teaser campaign. Two brand-new Super Mario games are out right now, split between Nintendo Switch and mobile. Per GameRant's report, the surprise drop puts a Luigi-led title on Switch and a Peach-fronted app on mobile, and both are available as of today.

Nintendo has leaned hard into the shadow drop lately, and it's easy to see why it works. Nothing cuts through a crowded news cycle like "this new game exists and you can play it in the next ninety seconds." My own Discord lit up fast after the news broke. Doesn't prove anything about reception, but it tells me people are paying attention.

Details on the Luigi release are thin for now. What we know is that it's a new Super Mario family game on Switch with Luigi in the lead, and Luigi's spinoff track record, from Luigi's Mansion to Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, has always leaned toward the weird and experimental. Whether this one follows that pattern, we'll have to see once people get hands on it.

The Peach app is the other half of the drop, and it continues a nice run of Peach getting top billing in her own projects, something Princess Peach: Showtime! already did on Switch. Mobile Mario has been a genuinely mixed bag over the years, including Dr. Mario World, which had its service ended back in 2021. So the standing question with any mobile Mario release is whether it's a real game or a monetization shell. I can't answer that from the initial report, and I'd still give it the one-weekend trial run before anyone in your group commits. House rule.

The part I find interesting is the split itself. Putting the Luigi game on Switch and the Peach game on mobile on the same day feels deliberate, like Nintendo is treating mobile as a real first-class home for the Mario family rather than an afterthought. That's a read, not a confirmed strategy, but it's the part I'll be watching.

There's no word yet on whether the two games connect in any way, or what either one costs. Knowing Nintendo, a cross-promotional tie-in wouldn't shock me.

If you grab either one this weekend, tell your group. And if your group has that one member who still insists mobile games don't count, well, this is a fun thing to drop in the chat at 2am.
