We are deep into August now, and if you are still reading fantasy baseball columns, you are either fighting for a title or fighting to stay out of the cellar. There is no in-between at Week 21. The trade deadline in most leagues has either passed or is closing fast, which means every deal you make from here carries real weight. One bad swap and you are watching someone else hoist the trophy.

The latest Week 21 trade values chart is out, and it is the kind of tool you need right now if you are serious about making a run. Whether you are playing roto or head-to-head points, rest-of-season rankings tell you who is built to carry you through September and who is running on fumes.

Something I have learned from years of doing this. The trade values chart is not gospel. It is a conversation starter. Dave Morgan over on the analytics side would probably tell you the numbers are the whole story, and I respect that, but the numbers do not know that your league mate has been trying to acquire a specific shortstop for three weeks and is ready to overpay. The chart gives you the baseline. The deal you actually make is where the art comes in.

At this point in the season, the names near the top of the chart are no surprise. You know who the elite players are. What matters now is the middle tier, where the difference between a championship and an early exit lives. A guy who went cold in July but has a favorable schedule down the stretch can be stolen if his owner is panicking. I have seen it a hundred times. Someone gets frustrated, ships off a productive bat for 60 cents on the dollar, and watches him go off in September for someone else.

The roto versus head-to-head points split matters more now than it did in May. In roto, you are chasing specific categories, and a specialist who steals 12 bases or nails down 8 saves can be worth more than a household name. In points leagues, consistency is king. You want the guy who grinds out professional at-bats every night, not the all-or-nothing slugger who hits one into the upper deck on Tuesday and disappears for the rest of the week.

If your trade deadline has not passed yet, do your homework tonight. Pull up the chart, cross-reference it with your team needs, and find the gap between what someone is worth on paper and what your opponent thinks they are worth. That gap is where you win championships.

And if the deadline has already passed, then it is about waiver wire survival and managing your innings limits. That is a column for another day. For now, get the deal done while you still can.
