ok so update on the thing I keep promising you guys: Zach Cregger's Resident Evil opened September 18 and people are already asking when they can watch it from the couch. Decider put together the full rundown and the short version is... nobody officially knows yet. But we can guess, and the guess is at least educated.

First, digital. The movie should hit VOD (so Prime Video, Apple TV, all the places where you rent for like 20 bucks and swear you'll only rent one thing) sometime in the next few weeks. That's speculation on my part, to be clear, it's just based on how these windows have generally worked lately. If it follows the usual rhythm, October feels right. Spooky season streaming. Convenient timing, almost suspiciously so.

Then the actual streaming home. Resident Evil is a Sony release (that part's confirmed), and Sony has a deal with Netflix where their movies tend to land after the theatrical and digital windows. Per Decider's breakdown, if this one follows that same pattern, you're looking at a Netflix arrival somewhere around mid-to-late winter. I can't give you an exact month because, again, nothing is official, and these windows get shuffled constantly. Netflix especially likes to just... drop things with two weeks notice.

Worth saying for the millionth time: none of this is confirmed. No date, no platform announcement, nothing official. I flagged this when I first covered the movie and I'll keep flagging it until there's an actual press release with an actual date on it. Treat everything above as pattern-reading, not reporting.

But also. I've said this before and I'll say it again: horror at home is not the lesser version of horror. I watched this thing in a theater with a screaming crowd and it was perfect, but Cregger's whole style (the dread, the silence, the WAIT what was that corner of the frame energy) plays genuinely great in a dark living room. Nobody should be a snob about waiting for streaming. The only real question is whether you can avoid spoilers until then, and based on how loud my timeline's been since opening weekend... good luck with that.

I'll update the second there's a confirmed date. Until then: digital probably sometime in the coming weeks, streaming after that, official word pending. Patience. Or don't wait, the movie's still in theaters and it's worth the ticket.
