Xbox is getting serious about Hollywood. A new division, called Xbox Division XP, is being set up to adapt more of Microsoft's gaming catalog into movies and TV shows, according to MSN's report. The name is a little silly in the best way, like someone in a boardroom finally leaned into the fact that this is a game company making TV.

The move makes sense when you look at what's already worked. Per the report, Xbox has already had success with A Minecraft Movie and Fallout. That's the whole pitch for Division XP right there: the experiments went well, so now there's a dedicated team whose actual job is finding the next one. It's the difference between dabbling in Hollywood and committing to it.

And a committed team pointed at Microsoft's catalog is an interesting idea, because the company owns a lot of beloved worlds. Halo, Gears of War, Fable, Forza, DOOM, The Elder Scrolls, Diablo, Call of Duty. I'll be careful here, because the source doesn't say which franchises Division XP will actually touch, and no projects have been announced. This is me staring at the shelf, not reading a roadmap. But it's a very full shelf, and some of these properties have been sitting on it for years while fans ask why nobody's done anything with them.

What I actually want from Division XP is patience. The best game adaptations work because the people making them understand the world and the tone, and they build a new story inside that world rather than filming a Wikipedia summary of the plot. The adaptations that stumble tend to fight against what made the source material feel like itself in the first place. The difference usually isn't budget. It's respect for the source, and the confidence to tell a new story in that skin instead of retelling an old one.

There's also a community angle here that I don't think gets talked about enough. When an adaptation lands, the game itself comes alive again. New players flood in because they want to walk around in what they just watched, and longtime fans get pulled back into a world they never really left. A good adaptation is the best marketing a game can get. Anyone who's watched their old guild chat light up when the game got a moment in the sun knows exactly what that feels like.

The obvious fan-favorite picks will get screamed about either way. Gears of War has been knocking around development discussions for years and deserves a real shot. Fable's dry British humor could carry a series in the right hands. I'll leave the deeper wishlist speculation until there's something concrete to react to.

Nothing specific has been announced for Division XP yet, so this is a structure before it's a slate. But Microsoft sitting on this many beloved franchises with a dedicated team pointed at Hollywood is a story worth tracking. I've said before that I've stopped pre-building hype for anything without a release date attached, and that applies double here. Still, the building blocks are promising.

What game would you want them to adapt first? Drop it in the comments. Mine's Viva Piñata, and I'm only half joking.
