Bandai Namco keeps quietly feeding the PS5's retro library, and the next dish is a deep cut I genuinely did not expect. PlayStation Lifestyle reports that Xevious 3D+, a long-forgotten PS1 action game from the classic Xevious shooter lineage, is headed to PS5 on September 30.

If the name only rings a faint bell, fair enough. Xevious is one of the foundational arcade vertical shooters, the kind of game where you're hitting targets in the air and on the ground at the same time while dodging everything in between. Xevious 3D+ was Namco's attempt to drag that formula into the polygon era on PlayStation hardware. It's a real deep cut, the sort of title that mostly survives in retro preservation threads and the memories of people who owned a PS1 back in the day.

For now we have the date and not much else. PlayStation Lifestyle doesn't have details on pricing or packaging, and my guess, and it's only a guess, is that it follows the pattern of other legacy PS1 reissues: light on extras, playable with modern conveniences if it lands in the right tier of the Classics catalog. Treat the store page on September 30 as the actual source of truth.

I've been saying for a while that game preservation lives or dies on this kind of unglamorous release. Not the remasters with redone textures and collector's statues, the plain reissues that make an old disc legally playable again. Somebody at Bandai Namco seems to be going down a shelf and checking boxes. I hope they don't stop.

If you missed it the first time around, this is a chance to poke at a fascinating artifact. Early 3D console experiments like this one are a time capsule of what developers thought "next-gen" meant at the time, and there's real charm in watching a studio drag a precision arcade formula into a brand-new dimension. And the Xevious loop itself, air and ground, one button each, is still one of the purest in shooter history.

September 30. That's next week. If you've got even a passing interest in arcade history, watch the store page.

What's the deep cut you're still waiting for on PS5? I'll take every Xevious they're willing to give me while I wait.
