Three East Coast heavyweights and a rumor mill that never sleeps in July. Sportsnet has the Yankees, Mets, and Red Sox all tangled up in trade deadline chatter, and if you read this space regularly none of it will shock you either.

The Yankees landing in the middle of this is about as surprising as rain in April. Of course they'll be aggressive. This is a franchise that treats August the way the '98 club treated the ninth inning of a blowout, a formality on the way to the real business.

The Mets are the interesting one, so let me tell you what we know versus what I think. We know the Phillies acquired Brooks Raley, per MLB Trade Rumors. What I think is that when a club gives up a relief arm in the middle of a competitive stretch, the front office is thinking about the shape of the roster, not just this weekend's box score. That's my read, nobody sourced it for me, and I'd bet a round at the bar that the Mets' next two weeks decide whether they add or keep peeling pieces off. I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again, but that's how I'd play it.

Boston showing up in the chatter is exactly why I love this time of year, because deadline rumors don't care what you think a team should do. I've said it before: deadlines are where seasons get rewritten, and the Red Sox have as much reason as anybody to ask the hard question. Is this roster one bat away from believing, or one trade away from mailing it in?

I'd remind the spreadsheet crowd of something here, and Dave Morgan knows I love him anyway: deadlines aren't won by models. They're won by the general manager who reads the clubhouse, who knows which team is one addition from taking off and which one is already halfway to the airport. The numbers tell you what a player did. They don't tell you what the building feels like on a Tuesday in August.

So watch the next week. The Yankees will be aggressive because that's what the Yankees are. The Mets will be calculating because Steve Cohen's wallet lets them be. And the Red Sox will do something, either committing to the roster they've got or starting to ask different questions about it. Either way the rumors tell you all three clubs believe the next move matters.
