Well. The September bets have paid off. Zach Cregger's Resident Evil is now officially the highest-rated video game adaptation ever, per DualShockers. A critical darling, going by the aggregator math, for a video game movie. We've been burned before, so let's all take a second and enjoy this actually happening.

Video game adaptations spent decades as a punchline, in my admittedly curmudgeonly opinion, with the rare Tomb Raider or Sonic breaking through just enough to keep hope alive. Then The Last of Us happened on TV, the Fallout show worked, Arcane won a pile of awards. And now a live-action Resident Evil feature sits at the top of the whole ratings mountain. The cursed genre doesn't feel cursed anymore. Whatever algorithm Hollywood was running finally clicked over.

What seems to be driving the reception, from everything I've read, is that Cregger treated the source material like a real place with real rules instead of a cosplay opportunity. The games have always been about scarcity and dread, that feeling of opening a door you really don't want to open, and early word says the movie keeps that instead of trading it for slow-motion gunfights set to a metal soundtrack. Respect for the material being the winning formula feels almost too obvious to say out loud. And yet it took this long.

For the gaming community specifically, this is one of those rare moments where the mainstream and the hardcore are nodding at each other. My group chat, which cannot agree on whether pineapple belongs on pizza, agreed on this within hours. My old EverQuest guild Discord resurfaced just to argue about which game the movie pulled its vibes from, and watching a 20-year-old community flare back to life over a movie argument is exactly the kind of thing I'm here for.

TJ and I have a running debate about where the soul of adaptation-fidelity lives too, though ours is about Final Fantasy. His position is you can't capture it, mine is you can if you actually try. I'm mailing him this ratings news with no comment attached.

If you've seen it, I'm curious what your read is. Did it earn the top spot, or is the critical warmth running a little warm? Drop your spoiler-free takes in the comments, because the full spoiler thread can wait a week for the people catching second showings. And if you haven't gone yet, go in cold. That's how this one wants to meet you.
