Yesterday we caught a first glimpse of Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie and now the full trailer is here, and I'm even more locked in than I was 24 hours ago. The reboot opens in theaters this fall, and [MSN has the trailer and full breakdown](https://www.msn.com/en-us/movies/news/watch-resident-evil-trailer-shows-zach-creggers-take-on-horror-franchise/ar-AA28wWgY?ocid=BingNewsVerp) if you haven't watched it yet.

I said yesterday that Cregger is exactly the right choice for this franchise because he gets that Resident Evil's fear lives in architecture and being underequipped, not just in the monsters. The full trailer doubles down on that. Characters moving through spaces that feel wrong, corridors that don't make sense, rooms that breathe with their own logic. That's the DNA of the original games, the thing that made you dread opening every new door in the Spencer Mansion.

And I've raided enough horror games with my group to know that the scariest moments never come from the big monster reveal. They come from the silence right before it. Cregger seems to understand that instinctively. Austin Abrams is carrying a lot of this trailer on his shoulders, and the guy sells pure panicked exhaustion like nobody's business. You feel how tired and underprepared he is.

The fall release window is smart too. This is a movie that wants the Halloween crowd, the people who go to theaters in October looking to get genuinely shaken up. It's also far enough out that Cregger has room to cook in post-production without a hard rush.

What I'm really watching for now is how the game community reacts as we get closer to release. Resident Evil fans are protective of this franchise in a way that makes FFXIV patch note discourse look casual. If Cregger nails the atmosphere, the fandom will embrace him. If he leans too hard into action spectacle, it'll be a long fall.

Either way, I'll be there opening night with my Discord crew. Some of us are already planning a theater meet-up for this one. What about you, are you grabbing your squad for this, or going solo into the dark?
