Resident Evil is back in theaters and based on everything Zach Cregger has done before, it's probably the scariest version of this franchise we've gotten in a while. The reboot officially started its theatrical run, and the big question everyone keeps asking me (fine, asking the internet, same thing) is when you can watch it from your couch.

Per the Economic Times, the plan is the usual one: theatrical window first, then an OTT release once the box office run wraps. No exact drop date yet, which is annoying but normal, studios never lock those in until they see how the theater numbers shake out. So if you're waiting to stream it... you're in for a bit of a wait. Platform details will firm up once the film finishes its theatrical cycle.

Quick context if you've been offline: Cregger is the guy who came out of nowhere with Barbarian in 2022 and made everyone scared of basement hallways forever. Him taking on Resident Evil felt like an inspired pick the second it was announced, because his whole thing is taking a setup you recognize and turning it into something way more unnerving than you signed up for.

And the franchise needed it, honestly. The Resident Evil movies have always been their own weird thing, big action vehicles that kept the name and sort of waved at the games from a distance. Fun? Sometimes. Actually scary? Rarely. A reboot that leans back into the horror roots of the games is the swing fans have wanted for literal decades.

I've said this before and I'll keep saying it: watching at home is a completely valid way to see a movie. If you want to wait for the streaming drop and experience the horror from under your own blanket, that's a real choice and nobody gets to be a snob about it. Horror arguably plays BETTER at home, in the dark, alone, making bad decisions about whether to check that noise in the kitchen.

I'll update once an actual OTT date and platform get confirmed. Until then the theater option is right there... and for a Cregger horror movie, that crowd experience might genuinely be part of the point.
