OK so I need to tell you guys something upfront. This is not my usual thing. I normally bring you stories about dogs on skateboards and ancient cups that change color and that is my whole deal. But sometimes a story just grabs you and goes "hey, pay attention to me" and... you do.

More than 500,000 people are reported missing in the US every single year. And most of those cases get resolved. Somebody wanders home, or gets found safe, or there's a paper trail that explains the whole thing. But some people just... vanish. And nobody ever figures out why.

AOL rounded up 15 of the most baffling unsolved missing persons cases still open today, and I clicked through every single one because I have zero self-control and also because these are real human beings whose families are still out there waiting.

That's the part that just gets me. Every single one of these cases has a family attached to it. Somebody who still has their phone number saved. Somebody who still leaves the porch light on. The cases span decades and they cross every kind of boundary you can think of, rural and urban, recent and cold, kids and adults, people who seemed to have everything going for them and people who were already living on the edge. There is no pattern here. There is no single thread connecting them. They just... stopped being there one day.

I'm not going to pretend I have some deep insight into investigative work. I write about cats elected as mayors and guys who accidentally propose at the wrong baseball game. That's my lane and I love my lane. But I read through all 15 of these and then I sat at my desk for a while afterward just kind of staring at the wall.

If you have any information about a missing person, even something that feels way too small to matter, the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) is a real tool that actually helps solve these cases. Like, genuinely solves them. A tip that seems completely tiny to you could be the piece somebody has been waiting on for years.

OK. Going back to my regularly scheduled wholesome content now because I need it and frankly so do you. But maybe share the list around. You genuinely never know who might see it and suddenly remember something.
