OK so you know how some mysteries just sit in your brain like a song stuck on loop and you physically cannot stop thinking about them? like you'll be in the shower or trying to fall asleep and your brain goes "but WHAT was on that tape though" and now you're awake at 2 AM reading forum posts from 2009?

that's what this whole list of 25 eventually-solved mysteries is about and I need to talk about it right now.

These are the ones that haunted people for years, sometimes decades, before someone finally cracked them open like a glow stick. And the relief? Immaculate. Collective. The kind of full-body exhale you feel in your soul.

So the Zodiac Killer's cipher is on here, which is the one that genuinely kept me up at night for weeks after I first read about it. A serial killer sent coded messages to newspapers in the late 1960s and nobody could crack them. Code breakers, FBI analysts, amateur sleuths on the internet for literally decades. And then in 2020 a team of citizen codebreakers finally did it. Regular people sitting at their computers solving a cipher that stumped the FBI for over 50 years. I just... I love humanity so much sometimes.

The Golden State Killer is on the list too and that one's a whole different kind of wild. Investigators used genetic genealogy, which is where they take crime scene DNA and match it against public genealogy databases to find family connections. They tracked down a former police officer who had terrorized California in the 1970s and 80s. Decades of fear and searching and the answer was hiding in shared DNA the whole time.

There are lighter ones mixed in too! Mysteries that don't involve crime but still made people absolutely lose their minds trying to figure them out. Weird historical puzzles. Strange discoveries that nobody could explain. Those ones hit different because they remind you that the world has always been deeply, wonderfully strange, and sometimes the answers are even stranger than the questions.

What I love about a list like this is that every single entry is proof that stubbornness pays off. Every one of these had people saying "we'll never know" and someone out there going "yeah but what if we COULD though." That's the energy I want to bring to everything in my life.

If you need me I'll be down a rabbit hole for the next six hours reading about every single one of these in way too much detail. Some mysteries get solved. Some take forever. But the people who refuse to let them go are my absolute favorite kind of humans.
