OK so astronomers just found something that they are calling a "black hole star" and I genuinely cannot stop thinking about it because what do you MEAN there's a whole new type of thing in space we didn't know about???

like, we've been staring at the sky for thousands of years and we're STILL finding new categories of objects. that is so cool to me.

so here's what's happening. you know those weird red dots that the James Webb Space Telescope kept spotting way out in the early universe? super distant, super old, and nobody could figure out what they were? people had theories (because scientists always have theories) but nothing that fit quite right.

well. according to CBS News, a team of astronomers is now announcing that these red dots might be something entirely new: a type of object they're calling a "black hole star." and the structure is wild because it's not two separate things sitting next to each other. it's one integrated thing. picture a cloud of gas with a supermassive black hole hidden INSIDE it. that's the whole object. that's what a black hole star is.

and the reason they look red to us is so cool. the black hole inside the gas cloud is producing a bunch of excess blue light, and then the dense gas surrounding it absorbs that blue light and re-emits it at redder wavelengths. so by the time that light reaches us from across the early universe it shows up as this distinctive red signature that Webb picked up. the gas is basically acting like a cosmic filter and i think that's beautiful.

and that means those mysterious red dots aren't any of the things people guessed! they might be these entirely new objects, glowing red across deep space, with supermassive black holes tucked inside them like a cosmic nesting doll.

i just love this so much. the universe keeps inventing new stuff and we keep finding it. every time i think space news can't surprise me anymore someone goes "hey we found a new type of object" and my brain does a little backflip. a gas cloud with a black hole embedded inside it, glowing red across deep space, is absurd and wonderful and i want to know everything about how it works immediately.

astronomers are still working out the details and i will absolutely be following this one because i need to know what happens next. how long does this phase last? what happens to the gas cloud over time? does the black hole eventually consume the surrounding material or can this arrangement persist? i have so many questions and i need answers.
