Straight up, this is the kind of Saturday night game that ends and you just sit there for a second thinking, okay, that kid can play.
Camden Coleman threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns and James Madison beat San Diego State 26-13, and the Dukes never really let it feel in doubt after building the early lead. You can check the full recap on ESPN, but the numbers only tell you the shape of the night. Not the feel of it.
And the feel is what I keep coming back to.
James Madison has been one of my favorite programs to watch since they made the jump to the FBS, because they carry that chip. You know the chip. The one where a program that was supposed to be happy just being there decides it's actually going to be a problem for everybody. The Dukes didn't ease into this one either, they punched first, got up early, and made San Diego State chase the whole night. And the Aztecs never caught them.
Winning with the lead is harder than it sounds, and I know that reads backwards but stay with me. When you're up early, every drive after that carries this quiet weight. One bad quarter and the whole thing flips. Coleman kept slinging anyway, 246 yards through the air, two of them ending in touchdowns, and every time San Diego State nudged the door open he kind of... slammed it back shut. Not flashy. Just done.
I care way more about the player than the stat line, and what stood out to me from this one is the composure. Quarterbacks get judged on the throws but the real tell is what they do in the fourth quarter of a two-score game on the road-ish, with a defense that keeps generating pressure, and Coleman just kept operating. Dave Morgan would tell me I'm romanticizing a 26-13 win over San Diego State and he might be right. I don't care. Football's more fun when you let yourself care.
San Diego State, to their credit, didn't fold. They got to 13, they kept pushing, and there were stretches where the Aztecs moved the ball well enough to make Dukes fans sweat a little. But James Madison's defense kept coming up with the stops that mattered, and when the game demanded someone make a play, it was Coleman and the Dukes making it.
If you're a Group of Five program, this is how you build relevance, one solid nonconference win at a time. Every one of them is a reason for a committee room in December to say your name out loud instead of skipping past it. James Madison keeps stacking those wins.
How good was this one if you're a JMU fan? Did you watch it live or catch the score later and grin anyway? I watched a lot of college football yesterday and this was one of the ones that stuck.
Keep an eye on Coleman the rest of the way. Not because of the 246 yards, though those are nice. Because of how the whole night sat on his shoulders and he just... carried it. That part travels with you.
