OK so Disney just dropped the trailer for Hexed and I've already watched it three times, which feels like the correct number of times for a trailer about a teenager finding out she's a witch and then immediately getting whisked off to a magical world that is, per the official description, dangerous. Not cozy-magical. Dangerous. My favorite kind.

The basics: a teenage girl discovers she has witch powers, which is already the dream, and then instead of just doing small spells in her bedroom like a normal person, she gets pulled into an entire hidden world of magic. And the trailer makes it very clear this place has rules, and stakes, and things with teeth. You can check out the full breakdown over at Yahoo Entertainment.

What gets me about the footage is the texture of it. You know how a lot of movie magic looks like it was pressure-washed? This looks lived-in. Weird plants. Odd lighting. A whole vibe of a world that existed long before this girl stumbled into it and will exist long after, whether she survives it or not, and honestly the best fantasy always feels like you're seeing one small corner of something enormous.

And the girl at the center of it, in the glimpses we get, has that exact energy you want from this genre: equal parts terrified and completely unable to walk away. She finds out she has power and the movie doesn't waste a single beat before making that power a problem. Because that's what powers are, right? Never just a gift. Always a gift and a bill.

It's a classic setup and I don't care that it's classic. Teen discovers magic has been the engine of some of the best stories we've got, and the reason it keeps working is that it's never really about the magic. The magic is just how you get at all the stuff underneath: figuring out who you are, what you're willing to fight for, whether you trust yourself when everything's on fire. Give me a girl with new powers and a dangerous magical world and I will show up with snacks.

No spoilers from me obviously, this is a trailer piece and also I don't know anything beyond the trailer, I'm just a person who watched a trailer an unreasonable number of times and now needs everyone she knows to watch it too.

Disney's been quietly stacking up these original(ish) fantasy adventures lately and Hexed looks like it could be the one that actually leans into the strange. Fingers crossed the full movie keeps the weird edges the trailer is promising and doesn't sand them down for the theatrical release.

Anyway. Teen witch. Perilous magic. Things with teeth. I'm in, and I suspect you will be too the second you press play.
