This week's Marks & Cars gathering went with a theme I'd have driven embarrassing distances for: Autobahn meets Autostrada. Germany's fastest road legends sharing one space with Italy's prettiest sheet metal, all under the banner of something called "Bar Stazione Bavaria." Classic Driver covered the whole thing, and the photos alone are worth the click.

If you've never been to one of these, the format is simple and it works. Cars park, people wander, coffee gets drunk, and sooner or later a guy who's owned the same 911 for thirty years starts telling you about the time the heater box failed in the Alps. You can't order that kind of conversation online. It's the same reason I keep showing up to local meets back home even when I already know half the vehicles in the lot by sound.

The German side brought what you'd expect: the big-bodied coupes and sedans built for sustained three-digit speeds, the machines that made the unrestricted Autobahn a cultural institution and not just a road. The Italians answered with the rolling argument that speed is fine, actually, but have you considered beauty? Low, wide, curves doing things curves have no business doing. Two philosophies of the automobile parked nose to nose.

And that's really the fun of a matchup like this. German engineering is an answer to a question about getting there fast and arriving calm. Italian design answers a different question entirely, something closer to, but what if the neighbors cried? Neither one is wrong. The best meets I've been to make you want both in the garage, which is a problem I've personally surrendered to more than once.

What I like about the "Bar Stazione Bavaria" framing is the bit of theater in it. Someone built a set for these cars instead of just lining them up in a lot, and the Italian-station name slapped onto a German car event tells you the organizers got the joke. The best car culture has always had a sense of humor about itself.

Anyway, the gathering's over for this week, but the gallery isn't. Go look, then tell me which side of the lot you'd have lingered on. I already know my answer, and it's the wrong one for my wallet.
