OK so imagine you're on a nice quiet beach. Sand, waves, seagulls doing their thing. And then you see it: a big metal sphere, just sitting there in the sand like someone dropped the world's heaviest marble. And then you look around and there are MORE of them.

That's what's been happening on a sandy beach where several of these giant metal spheres have washed ashore, and experts are very politely screaming the same message at everyone: do not touch them with your bare hands. Not a joke. Not a suggestion. Hands off.

The spheres are assumed to be some kind of industrial equipment, and the working theory in the original report is that they could contain pressurized gas or other substances inside, which is exactly the kind of thing you don't want leaking onto your skin, or worse, your eyes. Even if a sphere looks rusted and dead and sad, that rusted outer shell can be hiding pressure that has been building and building for years. One good bump or a crack in the wrong spot and it can rupture, and a pressurized container failing is not a gentle event.

And this is the part that gets me. These things look SO touchable. They're round and smooth and mysterious and your brain goes "ooh, beach ball" and your hand starts moving before your sense of self-preservation even wakes up. That's the trap. A weird sphere on a beach is basically a museum exhibit with no security guard, and the museum really needs you not to touch the art.

So what do you do if you find one? Keep your distance, don't poke it with a stick (people will do this, I know they will), and contact local authorities or the coast guard so someone trained can take a look. Taking a photo from far away is great. Being the person whose viral video is filmed from a safe hundred meters is even better.

I love a good washed-up mystery as much as anyone, and believe me I've written about my share of strange things appearing where they shouldn't. But the fun version of this story is "mysterious spheres appear, experts investigate, everyone goes home with all their fingers." The unfun version starts with someone saying "I wonder what happens if I..."

Look with your eyes, friends. Not your hands.
