The NHL is heading back overseas and honestly the league keeps quietly nailing this part of the calendar. This week we got the international locations for the 2027 Global Series plus the first two teams committed to packing their bags. Full breakdown is over at MSN's report on the announcement.

And I know international games get treated like a scheduling footnote. They shouldn't. These trips are some of the best hockey content of the entire year and most fans sleep on them until the photos start hitting social media.

Because that's what the Global Series is to me. A kid in Stockholm or Prague wearing a jersey with a name they just learned this week. A fourth-liner getting mobbed at a fan fest like he's a superstar because over there, for one week, he is. Players FaceTiming their parents from a rink they never imagined playing in. You don't get that from a Tuesday game in mid-January.

The league has been building this thing out for years and the formula works. Regular season points on the line, real stakes, packed European buildings, crowds that sing for three periods straight. European hockey fans do not sit down. Ever. It's one of the best atmospheres in the sport and I will not be taking questions.

What got me about this announcement was the two-team reveal. More teams get confirmed later but those first two commitments matter because they set the tone. When a star player signs on for a trip like this he's telling you the international push isn't some gimmick. It's a real part of where the game is going.

I keep going back to the salary cap piece I wrote a few weeks back, about how expensive this sport keeps getting for regular fans. The Global Series is sort of the opposite problem, in a good way. The league actively growing the tent. New cities, new kids, new future fans who'll be hooked for thirty years because of one game they saw live in 2027. That's the heartbeat stuff I'm always going on about.

Dave and I argued about this at lunch (Dave Morgan, not Dave Troyer, no relation to me, as far as anyone can prove) and he kept going on about market expansion numbers and I kept going no, Dave, it's about the kid with the homemade sign. We agreed to disagree. He's wrong.

More team announcements should be coming over the next few months and when the full slate drops I'll have reactions. Until then, if you've never watched a Global Series game live, put it on your list. The time zones will wreck your sleep schedule. It's worth it.

Did you ever catch one of these games in person or stay up absurdly late for one? Tell me. Those are the stories I want.
