OK so you know that feeling when a show gets cancelled after one season and you think "well, that's that" and then, years later, it quietly shows up on a best-of list and you get to be delighted all over again? That's today. Amazon's Night Sky, the 2022 sci-fi series starring J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek, just got ranked among the greatest TV shows ever made with fewer than 20 episodes, per AOL, and I am physically nodding along.
In case you missed it, and a lot of people did, which is sort of the whole point here: Night Sky is about an elderly couple, Franklin and Irene York, who have a buried chamber in their backyard that leads to a deserted planet. A portal. An actual window to another world. They've kept it secret for decades and mostly they just... sit there and look at it, holding hands, being married. And then obviously things escalate because this is television and television cannot let a nice alien portal stay nice and quiet forever.
The cast, though. J.K. Simmons! Sissy Spacek! Two absolute heavyweights spending eight episodes being tender and mysterious in equal measure, like a cozy farmhouse drama that occasionally remembers it's science fiction. The show got one season, eight episodes, and then Amazon pulled the plug in 2022 and people were genuinely sad about it. Not angry-cancelled-show sad. Wistful sad. The good kind, somehow.
That's what makes this list placement so satisfying. Shows with under 20 episodes usually land in the "gone too soon" pile and get talked about like failed experiments. Night Sky is getting talked about like a complete thought. Eight episodes, one story, one backyard, one marriage, and apparently that was enough to earn a spot among the all-time short-run greats alongside shows that people build entire personalities around.
I do think the brevity is doing real work here, too. Some shows run seven seasons and curdle. Night Sky never got the chance to overstay its welcome so what exists is just... concentrated. Every episode matters because there are only eight of them. The mystery stays mysterious. The portal stays wondrous instead of becoming lore homework with a wiki.
Also, and I will die on this hill, J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek as a long-married couple staring at an alien planet together is one of the most quietly beautiful premises sci-fi has given us this decade. It's a show about growing old with someone and how wonder doesn't retire. Franklin and Irene found a door to another world and their instinct was to keep it between the two of them. If that's not love I don't know what is.
If you never watched it, this is your sign. One season, eight episodes, you can knock it out in a weekend and then join the rest of us in the gentle melancholy club. It's a nice club. We have snacks and unresolved feelings about portals.
Congratulations, Night Sky. Cancelled, yes. Forgotten, absolutely not. The best little shows keep proving that you don't need 100 episodes to matter, you just need a backyard, a door to the stars, and J.K. Simmons looking up at them.
