OK so Mashable just dropped their October podcast guide and I've already got three of these queued because apparently my commute wasn't full enough. Eight shows. Some you listen to, some you watch, all of them sounding like they were made specifically to be texted to a friend with no context.

The one I'm most excited about, and I need you to understand how hard I clicked on this, is the show the guide describes as an invitation to her New York apartment. The host's apartment! A whole podcast built around letting you into a real person's actual home and actual life. I live for this stuff. It's the audio version of when a friend says "come over" and you get there and their bookshelves tell you everything about them.

And then there's Amelia Dimoldenberg, who the guide promises will be taking a few awkward dates this month. If you know her from Chicken Shop Date then you already know the vibe I'm expecting: deadpan questions, flustered guests, long silences that somehow make you love everyone in the room. The guide doesn't say exactly what format the dates will take, so I'm just crossing my fingers it's peak Amelia.

The rest of the lineup runs the usual beautiful podcast gauntlet, and this is where I tell you to just go read the full guide because Mashable breaks down why each one is worth your time. I don't want to spoil their whole list but there's a mix of the watchable kind (the video podcast era is fully upon us and I've made peace with it) and the classic eyes-closed-on-the-train kind.

What I love about a monthly guide like this, and I say this every time but it keeps being true, is that podcasts are the last place where someone can just... make a weird little show about a weird little thing and find their people. No algorithms demanding mass appeal. Just a person, a microphone, and an idea. October's crop feels extra like that. Personal projects. Somebody's apartment. Somebody's bad dates. Somebody's obsession turned into episodes.

I think fall is peak podcast season anyway. The air gets crisp, the walks get longer, and suddenly you have two hours of leaf-crunching time that needs filling. This list will do it.

Anyway. My October plan is the apartment show with tea, Amelia's dates with a snack, and the rest spread out over long walks. Will report back. I always say I'll report back and then I don't, but this time I mean it.
